Discussion Leader-Mark Lynch-Sixties Wrap-up

Well, here we are near the end of the course. My thanks to Ms. Link for the wonderful multi-media content and questions, and to all of you for the lively and informative discussions. So let's wrap it up in style...

[1] Julius Lester summarized the dream of the Sixties as a "society in which each man has the opportunity to love himself and... love his fellows". What do you think? Does that capture it well enough, or would you re-write that dream? Using whatever angle you wish, evaluate the "dream of the Sixties" from your own opinions and things you learned in the course.

[2] Many 1960s musical artists were very involved in movements they cared about; and there were especially many anti-war songs composed, recorded, and performed. Are there any parallels today, where artists are taking a stand on important issues, or has it all become just the business of selling product? Were the Sixties artists naive, or did they make a difference?

[3] Finally, think of the movements we studied- civil rights, anti-Vietnam, equal rights for women, sexual liberation and tolerance (birth control, abortion, gay-lesbian), environmental issues... choosing any one of these or a combination, how much have we progressed (or maybe regressed) in present-day society, compared to the situations then?
